We were invited to write a chapter on Collective Memory Work to the new version of the german-language-based Handbook of Qualitative Methods in Educational Studies (Handbuch „Qualitative Forschungsmethoden in der Erziehungswissenschaft”). Our handbook chapter will be structured as follows: We aim to contextualise Collective Memory Work (CMW) as a methodology within Educational Studies by first tracing its historical development and, secondly, by situating it within educational research contexts. We will outline the opportunities and limitations of CMW in educational science, as well as examine its compatibility with various (educational) research perspectives and theoretical paradigms. Furthermore, the chapter will illustrate the methodological approach of CMW, as developed by Frigga Haug and others, through an example from educational science.
In our panel we would like to engage the interested participants of the CMW Symposium in a critical discussion of our plans for writing this handbook chapter. We therefore plan to structure our session as follows: At the beginning we give a short input on the planned outline of the handbook chapter followed by a spotlight round of the workshop group’s reactions.
This is followed by a second presentation from our side, providing an overview on what contents and works we plan to reference, as well as the lines of argumentation we intend to follow. Afterwards we would like to have a longer and more open discussion with the workshop group on these plans. Especially the following discussion questions could be of interest to us, however we clearly want to be open to other reactions from the group as well:
– May we have overlooked important works, lines of argumentation and controversies for a handbook article on this topic?
– Do you see misinterpretations of former works that might happen with what we plan to do?
– What is the most important part(s) that a handbook article on this topic should definitely include from your perspective?
